How the Cowboys can clear cap room

March 8th, 2012 No comments

The Dallas Cowboys have a ton of offseason needs, many of which they plan to fill via free agency. But before they can go out and hunt for cornerbacks and safeties and guards and help for the pass rush, they need to know exactly how much salary cap room they have. Calvin Watkins writes that they’re about $12.5 million under the projected cap right now, but that they can clear more room by restructuring the contracts of Dez Bryant and some other players:
It’s written in wide receiver Dez Bryant’s contract the Cowboys can move his $1.

McShay and Mel mock the Texans

March 8th, 2012 No comments

Lost in a day that was busy thanks to Peyton Manning were new mock drafts from Todd McShay and Mel Kiper.

Here’s the fourth of four team by team reviews.

26) Houston Texans

McShay: Kendall Wright, WR, Baylor

“Wright will be looking to improve on the 4.61-second 40-yard dash at the combine when he runs at his March 21 pro day, but his stock hasn’t been hurt much because he plays much faster than that on tape. Wright could add another explosive element to the Houston offense and offer the coaching staff all kinds of possibilities lined up opposite Andre Johnson.

Chargers pick up former Chief

March 8th, 2012 No comments

Though unrestricted free agency doesn’t begin until Tuesday, a second AFC West player has swapped teams within the division.

The Chargers announced they have signed linebacker Demorrio Williams to a one-year deal. The eight-year veteran, who was cut by the Chiefs this week, spent the past four seasons with Kansas City. His production slipped dramatically the past two seasons as he fell from a starter to a backup.

Williams will provide depth for Chargers, and could play some special teams.

Audio: Packers’ A.J. Hawk on 2011

March 8th, 2012 No comments

We noted earlier this week that Green Bay Packers linebacker A.J. Hawk had cut his legendary hair as part of the startup to “Hawks Locks for Kids,” a charitable effort that will encourage the donation of long hair to groups that use them to create wigs for children undergoing treatment for cancer and other diseases.

Hawk appeared Thursday on ESPN 540 in Milwaukee to promote the cause, but he also engaged in what I thought was a fair conversation about his underwhelming season with the Packers in 2011.

Eli Manning restructure helps Giants vs. cap

March 8th, 2012 No comments

As we discussed in today’s free-agency primer, the New York Giants are the one team in our division that projects to be over the salary cap. One way around this is to get veterans like Brandon Jacobs to take big pay cuts or release them. But the more desirable way to do this is to restructure some of their bigger contracts. So it is that the Giants and quarterback Eli Manning have agreed on a contract restructure that will save them $6.75 million against this year’s cap, according to Mike Garafolo:
Per NFL Players Association records, the Giants guaranteed $9 million of Manning’s $10.

Chiefs, Broncos square off for Manning

March 8th, 2012 No comments

Rest assured, Romeo Crennel is not crazy.

As expected, the Kansas City Chiefs have joined the scrum for newly free Peyton Manning. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports the Chiefs are one of 12 teams that have reached out to Manning’s representatives since he was released by the Colts on Wednesday. Denver is also among the teams to contact Manning’s folks. The Broncos did so soon after Manning was cut.

The Chiefs’ foray into the Manning sweepstakes is not unexpected.

Dolphins, Peyton Manning and control

March 8th, 2012 No comments

There is very little to criticize about the career of future Hall of Famer Peyton Manning. He’s a complete quarterback on the field — one of the best of all-time — and a standup citizen off the field.

But if there is one thing you might be able to nitpick about Manning throughout his career, it’s that he likes control — and plenty of it. Once Manning proved himself in Indianapolis, the offense, playbook and quarterback freedom was built entirely around Manning.

On Anthony Hargove’s bounty statement

March 8th, 2012 No comments

Anthony Hargrove’s story is one of redemption.

The former St. Louis Rams and current Seattle Seahawks defensive lineman has fought through a series of obstacles, some of them self-constructed, to become a productive player and valued teammate.

But recent attention focusing on Hargrove’s role in the New Orleans Saints’ bounty scandal — he was fined for a hit on Brett Favre and reportedly reveled in the quarterback’s injury during the 2009 NFC Championship Game — has cast Hargrove in a negative light.

Anthony Hargrove speaks on Favre hit

March 8th, 2012 No comments

We’ve got a new development in the story about the New Orleans Saints’ bounty program.

Former New Orleans defensive lineman Anthony Hargrove, who spent last season with Seattle, has issued a lengthy statement, courtesy of NFC North colleague Kevin Seifert. Hargrove was a central figure in early reports on this story. A Sports Illustrated story even said Hargrove was vocally celebrating after Minnesota quarterback Brett Favre was injured in the NFC Championship Game between the Saints and Vikings in the 2009 season.

Anthony Hargrove: No reward for Favre hit

March 8th, 2012 No comments

You might remember Anthony Hargrove from this post during Super Bowl XLIV. Hargrove is a recovering addict who emerged from an indefinite NFL suspension to help the New Orleans Saints to their only championship two years ago.

His name has returned to the headlines this week, of course, because he is one of the Saints players penalized and fined for hits on Minnesota Vikings quarterback Brett Favre in the 2009 NFC Championship Game. Amid an NFL investigation that revealed a bounty program organized by defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, Sports Illustrated reported this week that Hargrove celebrated Favre’s ankle injury from the sidelines.
